RESUMO

In Canada, the health research funding landscape limits the self-determination of Indigenous peoples in multiple ways, including institutional eligibility, priority setting, and institutional structures that deprioritize Indigenous knowledges. However, Indigenous-led research networks represent a promising approach to transforming the funding landscape to better support the self-determination of Indigenous peoples in health research. The British Columbia Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research (BC NEIHR) is one of nine Indigenous-led networks across Canada that supports research leadership among Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) communities, collectives, and organizations (ICCOs). In this paper, we share three best practices to support the self-determination of ICCOs in health research based on three years of operating the BC NEIHR: (1) creating capacity-bridging initiatives to overcome funding barriers; (2) building relational research relationships with ICCOs ("people on the ground"); and (3) establishing a network of partnerships and collaborations to support ICCO self-determination. Supporting the self-determination of ICCOs and enabling them to lead their own health research is a critical pathway toward transforming the way Indigenous health research is funded and conducted in Canada.

At the microscale, coupled physical interactions between collectives of agents can be exploited to enable self-organization. Past systems typically consist of identical agents; however, heterogeneous agents can exhibit asymmetric pairwise interactions which can be used to generate more diverse patterns of self-organization. Here, we study the effect of size heterogeneity in microrobot collectives composed of circular, magnetic microdisks on a fluid-air interface. Each microrobot spins or oscillates about its center axis in response to an external oscillating magnetic field, in turn producing local magnetic, hydrodynamic, and capillary forces that enable diverse collective behaviors. We demonstrate through physical experiments and simulations that the heterogeneous collective can exploit the differences in microrobot size to enable programmable self-organization, density, morphology, and interaction with external passive objects. Specifically, we can control the level of self-organization by microrobot size, enable organized aggregation, dispersion, and locomotion, change the overall shape of the collective from circular to ellipse, and cage or expel objects. We characterize the fundamental self-organization behavior across a parameter space of magnetic field frequency, relative disk size, and relative populations; we replicate the behavior through a physical model and a swarming coupled oscillator model to show that the dominant effect stems from asymmetric interactions between the different-sized disks. Our work furthers insights into self-organization in heterogeneous microrobot collectives and moves us closer to the goal of applying such collectives to programmable self-assembly and active matter.

While the field of synthetic developmental biology has traditionally focused on the study of the rich developmental processes seen in metazoan systems, an attractive alternate source of inspiration comes from microbial developmental models. Microbes face unique lifestyle challenges when forming emergent multicellular collectives. As a result, the solutions they employ can inspire the design of novel multicellular systems. In this review, we dissect the strategies employed in multicellular development by two model microbial systems: the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum and the biofilm-forming bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Both microbes face similar challenges but often have different solutions, both from metazoan systems and from each other, to create emergent multicellularity. These challenges include assembling and sustaining a critical mass of participating individuals to support development, regulating entry into development, and assigning cell fates. The mechanisms these microbial systems exploit to robustly coordinate development under a wide range of conditions offer inspiration for a new toolbox of solutions to the synthetic development community. Additionally, recreating these phenomena synthetically offers a pathway to understanding the key principles underlying how these behaviors are coordinated naturally.

Este manuscrito tem como objetivo analisar de que modo coletivos juvenis LGBTQIAP+ têm produzido formas de re-existir a violências induzidas pelas expressões da necropolítica genderizada em Fortaleza. Ao longo do artigo, tomamos a necropolítica genderizada como uma ferramenta operacional da racionalidade neoliberal, que tem visado, dentre outras coisas, exaurir existências posicionadas como "outras" do padrão branco cis-hétero-patriarcal burguês, a exemplo de juventudes periféricas LGBTQIAP+. Elegemos a cartografia como ethos da pesquisa-inter(in)venção, a partir da qual fomentamos e compomos a rede "EntreColetivos". As análises foram feitas a partir de diários de campo sobre os encontros com essa rede de coletivos juvenis. As cenas trazidas apontam o dispositivo-arte como estratégia de enfrentamento à necropolítica genderizada, que assola desigualmente determinadas populações. As movimentações artísticas do "EntreColetivos" buscaram tornar a cidade circulável para juventudes negras e LGBTQIAP+, segmentos aos quais os espaços urbanos têm sido historicamente negados. Desse modo, observamos que a luta pela sobrevivência e pela re-existência nas margens não se encapsula em pautas identitárias. O "EntreColetivos" mostrou-se como uma rede de cuidado e luta, fazendo da arte e da ocupação da cidade um ato político de re-existência.


This manuscript aims to analyze how LGBTQIAP+ youth collectives have produced forms of re-existing violence induced by expressions of gendered necropolitics in Fortaleza. Throughout the article, we take gendered necropolitics as an operational tool of neoliberal rationality, which has aimed, among other things, at exhausting existences positioned as "others" of the bourgeois white cis-hetero-patriarchal standard, such as the peripheral LGBTQIAP+ youth. We chose cartography as the ethos of research-inter(in)vention, from which we foster and compose the "EntreColetivos" network. The analyzes were carried out through field diaries about the meetings with this network of youth collectives. The scenes brought point out the art device as a confrontation with the gendered necropolitics, which unequally devastates certain populations. The artistic movements of "EntreColetivos" sought to make the city accessible to black and LGBTQIAP+ youth, segments to which urban spaces have been historically denied. Thus, we observe that the struggle for survival and re-existence on the margins is not encapsulated in identity guidelines. The "EntreColetivos" showed itself as a network of care and struggle, making art and the occupation of the city a political act of re-existence.


Este manuscrito tiene como objetivo analizar cómo los colectivos juveniles LGBTQIAP+ han producido formas de violencia re-existentes inducidas por expresiones de necropolítica de género en Fortaleza. A lo largo del artículo, tomamos la necropolítica de género como una herramienta operativa de la racionalidad neoliberal, que ha apuntado, entre otras cosas, a agotar existencias posicionadas como "otras" del patrón cis-hetero-patriarcal blanco burgués, como la juventud LGBTQIAP+ periférica. Elegimos la cartografía como el ethos de la investigación-intervención, a partir de la cual fomentamos y componemos la red "EntreColetivos". Los análisis se realizaron a través de diarios de campo sobre los encuentros con esta red de colectivos juveniles. Las escenas presentadas señalan el dispositivo del arte como una confrontación con la necropolítica de género, que asola desigualmente a ciertas poblaciones. Los movimientos artísticos de "EntreColectivos" buscaron hacer accesible la ciudad a jóvenes negros y LGBTQIAP+, segmentos a los que históricamente se les han negado los espacios urbanos. Así, observamos que la lucha por la supervivencia y la reexistencia en los márgenes no se encapsula en pautas identitarias. Los "EntreColetivos" se mostraron como una red de cuidado y lucha, haciendo del arte y la ocupación de la ciudad un acto político de reexistencia.

Embedding ethical concepts into smart Internet-connected devices and making them behave in a more human-centred manner, i.e., ethically and in a socially acceptable manner, has received significant attention in the software industry. To make smart devices behave in more human-centered manners, it is important to develop a methodology for defining smart devices' key roles and mapping them with socio-ethical and administrative policies. This paper proposes a policy development methodology for making smart devices more human-centred by following its four phases i.e., concept development, defining and mapping policies, implementing the processing of policies, and deploying the devices. The suggested methodology may be used in a variety of situations where smart devices interact with people. For illustration, the proposed methodology has been applied to three different settings, including a supermarket, a children's hospital, and early learning centers, where each phase defined in the methodology has been followed. The application of the methodology to smart internet-connected devices, including robots, smart cameras, and smart speakers, has shown significant results. It has been observed that the devices behave in more human-centric ways while performing their core functions, adhering to socio-ethical policies.

This article approaches the emergence of social subjects - associativism - and the formation of horizontal circuits of solidarity, both of which were decisive processes for saving lives in favelas and suburbs in Rio de Janeiro during the Covid-19 pandemic.The impact of the pandemic has been enormous collective trauma that accentuated the collapse of health surveillance systems and generated a catastrophe and humanitarian crisis in the city. Solidarity and local collective cooperation processes had decisive effects as a new protagonism, generating synergy with health actions and social programmes. They contributed decisively to actions that made forms of immunological protection, food security, and access to basic care possible in adverse contexts with weak policies and severe limitations for social isolation.Highlighting the importance of collective health surveillance and assistance actions from local associations, this paper discusses public health actions in the favela territories that demonstrate how communities, universities, public officials, and public health networks can develop policies and projects to confront Covid-19 in the favelas.

The #WeAreNotWaiting movement is a global digital health phenomenon in which people with diabetes, mainly type 1 diabetes (T1D), engage in the development and usage of open-source closed-loop technology for the improvement of their "chronic living" (Wahlberg et al. 2021). The characteristics of a digitally enabled and technologically engaged global activist patient collective feed into existing narratives of user-led and open-source innovation. They also call for more exploration of what it actually means to be locally involved in this kind of technologically mediated and global form of patient engagement. Building on empirical research conducted in the German healthcare context, we explore the different forms of material participation encountered among a group of people with T1D (who describe themselves as loopers), who are engaged in the development and usage of this open-source technology. Introducing the concept of device activism, we retrace three different device-centered narratives that show how a globally shared concern and political participation through technology use varies with local practices. Hereby we stress that the engagement in the #WeAreNotWaiting movement is both shaped by and is shaping the matters of concerns: devices in, on, and with bodies.

Consideration of collectives raises important questions about human rationality. This has long been known for questions about preferences, but it holds also with respect to beliefs. For one, there are contexts (such as voting) where we might care as much, or more, about the rationality of a collective than the rationality of the individuals it comprises. Here, a given standard may yield competing assessments at the individual and the collective level, thus giving rise to important normative questions. At the same time, seemingly rational strategies of individuals may have surprising consequences, or even fail, when exercised by individuals within collectives. This paper will illustrate these considerations with examples, provide an overview of different formal frameworks for understanding and assessing the beliefs of collectives, and it will illustrate how such frameworks can combine with simulations in order to elucidate epistemic norms.

Maori (Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand) bear an unequal burden of poor perinatal health outcomes, including preterm birth. An infant arriving preterm disrupts the birth imaginary of whanau (family collectives) and situates them in a foreign health environment that may not be culturally safe and nurturing. A cross-sectional interpretative phenomenological analysis of first interviews with 19 whanau participating in a Kaupapa Maori (by, with, for Maori) qualitative longitudinal study of preterm birth identified themes from their experiences and the meanings they attributed to them. Preterm birth was an emotional roller coaster, with the birth imaginary and anticipated roles disrupted as health practitioners took over the care of their infants. Whanau expressed the desire to be close to their infants, holding them, loving them, nurturing them, and emplacing them within whakapapa (genealogy, continual layering of foundations) networks. When health practitioners or hospital policies inhibited this intimacy by isolating, excluding, or discriminating, whanau were frustrated. Being familiar with hospital routines, staff, peers, infant cares, and being wrapped in wider whanau support were key for whanau coping. Whakawhanaungatanga (processes of establishing relationships) create safe spaces for whanau to be themselves. This quietens the 'storm' and returns whanau to a sense of calm, through the reclamation of their environment.

BACKGROUND: Patient advocacy organizations (PAOs) have an increasing influence on health policy and biomedical research, therefore, questions about the specific character of their responsibility arise: Can PAOs bear moral responsibility and, if so, to whom are they responsible, for what and on which normative basis? Although the concept of responsibility in healthcare is strongly discussed, PAOs particularly have rarely been systematically analyzed as morally responsible agents. The aim of the current paper is to analyze the character of PAOs' responsibility to provide guidance to themselves and to other stakeholders in healthcare. METHODS: Responsibility is presented as a concept with four reference points: (1) The subject, (2) the object, (3) the addressee and (4) the underlying normative standard. This four-point relationship is applied to PAOs and the dimensions of collectivity and prospectivity are analyzed in each reference point. RESULTS: Understood as collectives, PAOs are, in principle, capable of intentionality and able to act and, thus, fulfill one prerequisite for the attribution of moral responsibility. Given their common mission to represent those affected, PAOs can be seen as responsible for patients' representation and advocacy, primarily towards a certain group but secondarily in a broader social context. Various legal and political statements and the bioethical principles of justice, beneficence and empowerment can be used as a normative basis for attributing responsibility to PAOs. CONCLUSIONS: The understanding of responsibility as a four-point relation incorporating collective and forward-looking dimensions helps one to understand the PAOs' roles and responsibilities better. The analysis, thus, provides a basis for the debate about PAOs' contribution and cooperation in the healthcare sector.

A chegada da pandemia do coronavírus no Brasil muda profundamente a dinâmica de vida da população. No que diz respeito às favelas e periferias, uma série de desafios para a efetivação das prescrições sanitárias contra o vírus escancaram a forte desigualdade que é estruturante da sociedade brasileira e que o vírus pretensamente democrático na verdade ganha outras características no contato com a desigualdade social e o racismo. A indiferença do poder público com determinados territórios, motivadas por uma racionalidade de governo orientada pela necropolítica outorga à população a responsabilidade de se organizar para garantir alimentação, cuidados em saúde e informação aos moradores. O papel do coletivo no enfrentamento às violações de direitos e construção de mundos possíveis é reafirmado pelas ações de solidariedade e pela tentativa de construir outros futuros para os que sofrem com violências todos os dias.


The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil profoundly changes the life dynamics of the population. With regard to favelas and suburbs, a series of challenges for the implementation of sanitary prescriptions against the virus expose the strong inequality that structures Brazilian society and also shows that the allegedly democratic virus actually assumes other characteristics in contact with social inequality and the racism. The indifference of public authorities to certain territories, motivated by a government rationality guided by necropolitics, gives the population the responsibility to organize themselves to guarantee food, health care and information to residents. The role of the collective in confronting violations of rights and building possible worlds is reaffirmed by actions of solidarity and by the attempt to build other futures for those who suffer from violence every day.


La llegada de la pandemia de coronavirus a Brasil cambia profundamente la dinámica de vida de la población. Con respecto a las favelas y las periferias, una serie de desafíos para la realización de prescripciones sanitarias contra el virus abren de par en par la fuerte desigualdad que está estructurando la sociedad brasileña y que el virus supuestamente democrático en realidad adquiere otras características en el contacto con la desigualdad social y el racismo. La indiferencia de las autoridades públicas hacia ciertos territorios, motivadas por una racionalidad del gobierno guiada por la necropolítica, otorga a la población la responsabilidad de organizarse para garantizar alimentos, atención médica y información para los residentes. El papel del colectivo contra las violaciones de los derechos y la construcción de mundos posibles se reafirma mediante acciones de solidaridad y el intento de construir otros futuros para los que sufren con la violencia todos los días.

Collective behavior is widely regarded as a hallmark property of living and intelligent systems. Yet, many examples are known of simple physical systems that are not alive, which nonetheless display collective behavior too, prompting simple physical models to often be adopted to explain living collective behaviors. To understand collective behavior as it occurs in living examples, it is important to determine whether or not there exist fundamental differences in how non-living and living systems act collectively, as well as the limits of the intuition that can be built from simpler, physical examples in explaining biological phenomenon. Here, we propose a framework for comparing non-living and living collectives as a continuum based on their information architecture: that is, how information is stored and processed across different degrees of freedom. We review diverse examples of collective phenomena, characterized from an information-theoretic perspective, and offer views on future directions for quantifying living collective behaviors based on their informational structure.

Many complex behaviors in biological systems emerge from large populations of interacting molecules or cells, generating functions that go beyond the capabilities of the individual parts. Such collective phenomena are of great interest to bioengineers due to their robustness and scalability. However, engineering emergent collective functions is difficult because they arise as a consequence of complex multi-level feedback, which often spans many length-scales. Here, we present a perspective on how some of these challenges could be overcome by using multi-agent modeling as a design framework within synthetic biology. Using case studies covering the construction of synthetic ecologies to biological computation and synthetic cellularity, we show how multi-agent modeling can capture the core features of complex multi-scale systems and provide novel insights into the underlying mechanisms which guide emergent functionalities across scales. The ability to unravel design rules underpinning these behaviors offers a means to take synthetic biology beyond single molecules or cells and toward the creation of systems with functions that can only emerge from collectives at multiple scales.

Deinstitutionalization is often described as an organizational shift of moving care from the psychiatric hospital towards the community. This paper analyses deinstitutionalization as a daily care practice by adopting an empirical ethics approach instead. Deinstitutionalization of mental healthcare is seen as an important way of improving the quality of lives of people suffering from severe mental illness. But how is this done in practice and which different goods are strived for by those involved? We examine these questions by giving an ethnographic description of community mental health care in Trieste, a city that underwent a radical process of deinstitutionalization in the 1970s. We show that paying attention to the spatial metaphors used in daily care direct us to different notions of good care in which relationships are central. Addressing the question of how daily care practices of mental healthcare outside the hospital may be constituted and the importance of spatial metaphors used may inform other practices that want to shape community mental health care.

INTRODUCTION: Swabhimaan is a community-based programme to improve adolescent girls' and women's nutrition in the rural areas of three Indian states-Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha with high prevalence of undernutrition. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Swabhimaan has a nested prospective, non-randomised controlled evaluation. Since 2017, five intervention sites receive community-led interventions through national government's livelihood mission supported women's self-help group federations and five control sites will initiate these activities 36 months later, in 2020. Community-led activities aim to improve coverage of 18 interventions including adequacy of food consumed, prevention of micronutrient deficiencies, access to basic health services and special care of nutritionally 'at risk' girls and women, improving hygiene and access to water and sanitation services and access to family planning services. The evaluation includes baseline (2016-2017), midline (2018-2019) and endline (2020-2021) surveys covering 6638 adolescent girls, 2992 pregnant women and 8755 mothers of children under 2. The final impact analysis will be by intention to treat, comparing primary and secondary outcomes in five intervention areas and five control areas. The primary outcomes are: (1) a 15% reduction in the proportion of adolescent girls with a body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m2; (2) a 15% reduction in the proportion of mothers of children under two with a BMI <18.5 kg/m2 and (3) and a 0.4 cm improvement in mean mid-upper arm circumference among pregnant women. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: All procedures involving human subjects were approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha and in compliance with guidelines laid down in the Declaration of Helsinki. Neste texto são apresentados os resultados de um projeto de criação fotográfica, desenvolvido pela primeira autora do trabalho, inspirado pela pergunta de Espinosa "O que pode o corpo?", fotografando acontecimentos cotidianos relacionados ao corpo e às suas relações com os espaços públicos do centro da cidade de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. Após a experiência em campo foram selecionados dois temas, o corpo arte e os corpos coletivos, para construir uma reflexão a partir de um componente textual e outro visual, oferecendo ao leitor diferentes linguagens, as dizibilidades e as visualidades das relações entre corpo e cidade, capazes de criar novas corpografias: corpografias de resistência.(AU)


In this paper the results of a photographic creation developed by the first author were presented, inspired by Spinoza's question "What can a body do?", by photographing everyday events related to the body and its relations with the public spaces in the center of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. After the field experience two themes were selected, the body art and the collective bodies, to build a reflection presented as a textual component and a visual component, offering the reader different languages, the speakable and the visible of the relationship between body and city, capable of creating new bodygraphies: bodygraphies of resistance.(AU)


En este texto se presentan los resultados de un proyecto de creación fotográfica, desarrollado por la primera autora del trabajo, inspirado por la pregunta de Espinosa "¿Qué puede el cuerpo?", fotografando acontecimientos cotidianos relacionados con el cuerpo y sus relaciones con los espacios públicos del centro de la ciudad de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. Después de la experiencia en campo se seleccionaron dos temas, el cuerpo arte y los cuerpos colectivos, para construir una reflexión desde un componente textual y otro visual, ofreciendo al lector diferentes lenguajes, las afirmaciones y las visualidades de las relaciones entre cuerpo y ciudad, capaces de crear nuevas corpografías: corpografías de resistencia.(AU)

BACKGROUND: We examined the feasibility of engaging women collectives in delivering a package of women's nutrition messages/services as a funded stakeholder in three tribal-dominated districts of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh States, in eastern India. These districts have high prevalence of child stunting and poor government service outreach. METHODS: Conducted between July 2014 and March 2015, an exploratory mix-methods design was adopted (review of coverage data and government reports, field interviews and focus group discussion with multiple stakeholders and intended communities) to assess coverage of women's nutrition services. A capacity assessment tool was developed to map all types of community collectives and assess their awareness, institutional and programme capacity as a funded stakeholder for delivering women's nutrition services/behaviour promotion. RESULTS: Limited targeting of pre-pregnancy period, delays in first trimester registration of pregnant women, and low micronutrient supplementation supply and awareness issues emerged as key bottlenecks in improving women's nutrition in these districts. Amongst the 18 different types of community collectives mapped, Self Help Groups (SHGs) and their federations (tier 2 and tier 3), with total membership of over 650,000, emerged as the most promising community collective due to their vast network, governance structure, bank linkage, and regular interface. Nearly 400,000 (or 20% of women) in these districts can be reached through the mapped 31,919 SHGs. SHGs with organisational readiness for receiving and managing grants for income generation and community development activities varied from 41 to 94% across study districts. Stakeholders perceived that SHGs federations managing grants from government and be engaged for nutrition promotion and service delivery and SHG weekly meetings can serve as community interface for discussing/resolving local issues impeding access to services. CONCLUSIONS: Women SHGs (with tier 2 and tier 3) can become direct grantees for strengthening coverage of women's nutrition interventions in these tribal districts/pockets, provided they are capacitated, supervised and given safe guards against exploitation and violence.

RESUMO

Whilst the loss of a sense of living connection with the material world is mainly associated with the scientific revolution in seventeenth century Europe, it can be traced back to Plato's introduction of a hierarchy between soul and body. Jung's attempted solution to this - esse in anima - is ingenious but maintains the Cartesian split by which the aliveness of the world is reduced to a projection of psychic forces (the archetypes). An alternative approach is proposed, rooted in the Aristotelean emphasis on practical activity that sees the soul as a function of our way of being in the world. Human cognition is extended and distributed by our social and material engagement with the world, especially via collective representations whose symbolic character is constitutive of the reality of the world in which we live. Despite the dominance of 'scientific Cartesian' representations in the modern Western world, there remain numerous instances of participation mystique that cannot be captured by the Cartesian notion of projection. These indicate an opening to ways of being in the world that may lead us out of the impasse of the Cartesian matrix.

Resumen: Este artículo se propone sistematizar algunas reflexiones emergentes de la participación del autor en dos itinerarios militantes yuxtapuestos: la participación en los colectivos de varones antipatriarcales (2009/2014) y el activismo feminista hacia el interior de organizaciones de la izquierda popular argentina. El texto se nutre de ambas experiencias para problematizar los vínculos entre colectivos de varones -y activismo antipatriarcal/feminista de los varones, más allá de su organización o no en colectivos específicos- y feminismos, pensando esta compleja relación en términos de aportes, tensiones y desafíos. Estas reflexiones activistas responden a una concepción metodológico-dialéctica que puede sintetizarse en la triada práctica-teoría-práctica. De esta manera, los vínculos establecidos entre colectivos de varones y feminismos emergen desde la praxis, para ser problematizados, teorizados y conceptualizados con el objetivo de volver a la práctica misma, para transformarla.

Abstract: This article systematizes some emerging considerations based on two juxtaposed activist itineraries by the author: his participation in anti-patriarchy men's groups (2009/2014) and feminist activism within popular left organizations in Argentina. It draws from both experiences to question the links between groups of men - and anti-patriarchal / male feminist activism beyond this specific groups - and feminisms, addressing this complex relationship in terms of contributions, tensions and challenges. A dialectical methodological approach is used, which can be summed up by the practice-theory-practice triad. Thus, the links established between groups of men and feminisms emerge from praxis, in order to be problematized, theorized and conceptualized with the aim of transforming practice itself.

RESUMO

Group settings are epicentres of emotional activity. Yet, the role of emotions in groups is poorly understood. How do group-level phenomena shape group members' emotional experience and expression? How are emotional expressions recognised, interpreted and shared in group settings? And how do such expressions influence the emotions, cognitions and behaviours of fellow group members and outside observers? To answer these and other questions, we draw on relevant theoretical perspectives (e.g., intergroup emotions theory, social appraisal theory and emotions as social information theory) and recent empirical findings regarding the role of emotions in groups. We organise our review according to two overarching themes: how groups shape emotions and how emotions shape groups. We show how novel empirical approaches break important new ground in uncovering the role of emotions in groups. Research on emotional collectives is thriving and constitutes a key to understanding the social nature of emotions.
